Paris is made up of several arrondissements or districts, numbered from 1 to 20 and logically ordered with the 1st in the centre and the others following on in a clockwise spiral. The most well known groupings for these arrondissements are described below, along with their key features and/or landmarks. Properties have been categorized according to these groupings.
LATIN QUARTER: This area is among the liveliest, thanks to its student life and many restaurants, cafés and bookstores. Landmarks include the Sorbonne (Paris' most renowned university) and the Pantheon (the mausoleum for great men of France). This category generally covers areas of the 5th arrondissement on the Left Bank.
LEFT BANK: Here you will find properties in all areas on the left bank of the Seine River outside the Latin Quarter, St. Germain des Prés and Montparnasse. Landmarks include the Luxembourg Gardens and Palace, the Invalides, the Eiffel Tower, and the National Assembly. This category generally covers areas of the 5th, 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th and 15th arrondissements.
LOUVRE: The area around the world famous for museums including the Palais Royal, the Tuileries Gardens, Place de la Concorde, and place Vendôme. This category generally covers the 1st arrondissement and lies on the Right Bank.
MARAIS: A trendy neighborhood with mostly pre-Revolutionary architecture. Landmarks include Place des Vosges, Hôtel de Sully (a 17th century aristocratic mansion), and many museums. This category generally covers areas of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements and lies on the Right Bank.
MONTMARTRE: A neighborhood of artists and writers in the 19th century that still retains an upbeat atmosphere. Landmarks include the Basilique du Sacré Coeur (Sacred Heart), and the Place du Tertre. This category generally covers the 18th arrondissement and lies on the Right Bank.

ST. GERMAIN DES PRÉS: Another lively area, next to the Latin Quarter, home of famous eateries like "Café des Deux Magots" and "Brasserie Lipp".
