In a remote field an hour and a quarter east of Portland sits a traditional Maine farmhouse and barn. Fifty years ago the owners converted the barn into a second dwelling for their children, and this unique summer rental is now offered to a few lucky vacationers. At the request of the owners, this listing is limited in detail and pictures to protect their privacy.
The Barn is in the middle of a 700-acre conservation area with trails, wetlands, two tidal rivers and a small mountain. From the Barn, the view across fields and down a tidal river ends with the sea and nearby islands. The river is an ideal place for bird-watching and exploring in canoe or kayak (which are both available with the house). A quarter-mile walk from the Barn is a mile-long white sand beach, the perfect place for swimming, kayaking, building sand castles, collecting shells or just wandering. From the top of the mountain are views of the coast stretching from Portland to Monhegan, an archipelago of islands and, on a clear day, views of snow-covered Mt. Washington.
The Barn has three double bedrooms, one single bedroom and a full bath on the second floor. Downstairs, a generous, sunny living room has a dining area at one end, a fireplace and shelves of books, games and puzzles for all ages. A large eat-in kitchen makes the Barn perfect for family vacations. A large screened in porch, for eating and relaxing, which looks past Morse River to the sea, was added in 2009.
Within a few miles there are available excellent fresh organic vegetables, fruits and flowers, meats, fish, cheeses, and wine. Exploration of coastal Maine is a never-ending enjoyment, and a small town less than half an hour away harbors an outstanding marine museum, a beautiful library and a variety of good restaurants.
Most of those who come to stay return year after year.
